Summer is just around the corner, and temperatures are quickly heating up. WATCH THERMOSTAT SETTINGS
According to the Department of Energy, your interior temperature should closely match the exterior temperature in order to keep your AC bill down. We know you can’t handle 102 degree temps in your home, but don’t fall victim to the temptation to crank the AC up when you come in and it’s hot. Moving your thermostat to a colder temp won’t cool your home faster – it will only make your AC work harder.
Also, keep appliances like TVs, computers, and lamps far away from the thermostat, as the heat from them can kick your AC on when the house isn’t that warm.
USE A FAN
Floor and ceiling fans are vital tools in the effort to cool your home without further taxing your AC system. If your temperature is too hot, kick them on to cool off the area you are sitting. The fans help to distribute the cooler air throughout the room and the house, and may actually make it feel anywhere from 4-6 degrees cooler than it actually is.
SEAL YOUR WINDOWS
Now that temps are hot outside, you need to keep all the cool air inside if possible. Seal any leaks you find in your doors and windows, and add insulation to the basement and attic. Not only are these things good for your AC, they may also be a tax write-off come April, and may save you 10% on your energy bill.
